What is Life?

  • Life is an emergent property that emerges from the interactions of its components.
  • Emergent property is the property that does not exist in its constituents, but only exists when the components are put togther.
  • For instance, water (H2O) is made of hydrogen and oxygen, but the property of water does not exist in hydrogen nor oxygen.
  • Life emerges when the components of a system (i.e., cells) are interacting with each other that produces some functions.
  • When these components stop functioning, it is dead.
  • Thus, life is a dynamical property that only exists when its components are working.
