Master's Degree Information
If you are planning to complete
your Masters of Science degree any time soon, there are some things you should
know:
Initial Steps:
- Decide on your project topic and choose a project advisor.
- IMPORTANT: If you are a PhD student and are getting a Master's Degree along the way to a PhD here at UNT, then you
will need to fill out a Pass Through Masters Degree application: Pass Though Master's Degree form
- The Pass Through Master's Degree Application should be
submitted to the Graduate School several weeks prior to submission of your
master's degree plan - you have to be admitted to the master's program before
the Graduate School can review your degree plan.
- File a degree plan with the Graduate School. There is a Mathematics Department form for this (it is a .doc form)
Masters of Science Degree plan form
- You degree plan requires the names AND signatures of three faculty members who will serve on your project committee. Obviously, you must confirm with the other committee members about their willingness to serve.
- Conduct research until ready to give an oral presentation on the project.
The semester you intend to graduate:
- You must apply for graduation. You will need to go to the graduate school and pick up a graduation packet.
- Form a three person MS project committee. It may be
that this will be precisely those three faculty members that signed
your degree plan. However, if that needs to change, you will need
to contact the Graduate Advisor to arrange for changes to be made.
- Confirm with the other committee members about their
willingness to serve. Again, if this committee is different from
the committee formed at the time of filing degree plan, you need to
file a change form with the Graduate Advisor and the Graduate
School.
Your Project and related requirements:
- You will deliver your oral presentation
Your Advisor will serve as chair and coordinate the student
presentation. There will be public questions, committee
questions, followed by committee discussions and voting, and
notification of presentation results
- All three committee members must sign the presentation form to approve the presentation.
- Your advisor will pass the signed presentation form (this form is actually called the comprehensive exam/final project form by the Graduate School) to Kiersty. After that, the Chair will sign it and it will be sent along to the graduate school.
Three IMPORTANT things that must be submitted to the Graduate Affairs Committee:
- You (the student) must submit summary of the project (2 pages minimum), typeset in some form of TeX (LaTeX, etc.)
- You (the student) must submit sample work on project.
These can include drafts, computer code/output, slides, or power
point, related to the project.
