Mathematics 2700 Syllabus - Spring 2006

Prerequisite: Math 1720 - Second semester calculus

Book: Linear Algebra and Its Applications by David Lay - Third Edition

Professor: Neal Brand

Office:    GAB 435C (Tell the person at the front desk that you are there for Dr. Brand's office hours.)  M,W 11:00-12:30, Th 10:00-12:00

Grading: Grades will be based on three regular exams, homework, and a final.  You will receive approximately 25 homework assignments, each worth 10 points.  At the end of the semester, your homework scores will be totaled and divided by approximately 2.5 in order to make a maximum of 100 points possible. Each regular exam is worth 100 points and the final exam is worth 200 points.  Either your lowest exam grade will be dropped or 1/2 of your final exam grade will be dropped, whichever is to your advantage.  This makes a total of 500 possible points, of which a total of 450 is sufficient for an A, 400 for a B, 350 for a C, and 300 for a D.   These cut off scores could be lowered slightly if the exams turn out to be more difficult than anticipated, but the cut off scores will not be raises.

Regular Exams: The regular exams will be given in class most likely on February 20, March 24 and April 24.  The final exam is scheduled for Monday, May 8 between 8:00 and 10:00 in the classroom.  There is some chance that the regular exam dates may change by a few days, but it is very unlikely that the final exam schedule will change.  If you miss an exam for any reason, that is the exam that will be dropped.

Homework: Homework will be assigned from the book and possibly from handouts. The assignments will be posted on the web. You are expected to turn in homework that is written neatly and shows all essential work.  If the grader has trouble reading the homework, then the homework will be returned with a zero.   Homework will be assigned each day and collected at the beginning of the following class.  Come to class with your homework completed, stapled and ready to turn in.

Web Page: From the UNT home page follow through the links through the College of Arts and Sciences, the Mathematics Department and Neal Brand's home page to find the Math 2700 home page. This page contains homework assignments and other class information. The URL is http://www.math.unt.edu/~brand/class/2700/2006Spring/2700.html

Attendance: It is essential that you come to class in order to master the material. You are expected to attend all classes, although attendance will not be used in the computation of your grade.

Extra Credit: Do not expect to be able to do extra credit work to help your grade either before or after the final exam. There will be no extra credit for this course other than perhaps an extra problem on an exam. Please do not ask for extra credit work to help your grade. Your best bet to help your grade is to do the required work at the time it is assigned.

Classroom Behavior:  Please see the web site www.unt.edu/csrr regarding what is expected of you in class and what you can expect of your instructor.

Disabilities: It is the responsibility of students with certified disabilities to provide the instructor with appropriate documentation from the Dean of Students Office.  Furthermore, no accommodations will be given unless the student contacts the instructor and makes arrangements well in advance.

Cheating: No cheating will be tolerated. Anyone caught cheating will receive an F for the course. Furthermore, a letter will be sent to the appropriate dean. I expect no cheating in this class.
