COURSE COORDINATOR RESPONSIBILITIES
(Work in Progress)
Responsibilities of Course Coordinator:
- Meet with all section instructors at beginning
of semester. In the meeting the course coordinator should:
- Standardize topics covered and the depth
they are covered.
- Discuss the syllabus and what is appropriate
and inappropriate to include.
- Go over prerequisite verification procedures.
- Discuss number of tests and level of
difficulty of tests. This should be fairly uniform over all the sections.
- Discuss Directed Tutors or SI’s (for
1010 and 1100).
- Discuss strategies to keep students
happy while still maintaining academic standards.
- Make sure all TA’s know they can get
help from the coordinator when they need it.
- Be a liaison between the Math Lab and
the instructors for the course. In this role the course coordinator
will:
- Keep instructors informed concerning
topics that students are asking about in Math Lab.
- Keep Math Lab informed about what is
going on in the course. For example, if all instructors are teaching
completing the square in a certain way, then the Math Lab staff needs to
be aware of this.
- Hear student complaints concerning this
course, including concerns about the instructor. This involves:
- Reading student concerns forms and
then talking to students.
- Informing instructor of the concerns.
This is done to let the instructor know that a student had a concern so
the instructor can think about what, if anything should be changed in the
class.
- In rare cases direct the student with
the concern to the chair.
- Modify the course syllabus based
on
- Input from the instructors
- Input from Math Lab
- Input from students
- Discussion with coordinators of prerequisite
courses, coordinators for other courses having this course as a prerequisite,
and previous coordinators of this course.
- Discussion with the Math Dept. Undergraduate
Committee Chair.
- New book adoption.
