Departmental Undergraduate Scholarships
There are several departmental undergraduate
scholarships available.
- E. H. Hanson Scholarship
- Roger L. Perry Scholarship
- Mildred Masters McCarty Scholarship
- John Ed Allen Scholarship
Eligibility
The applicant must be new or continuing undergraduate
student whose major is mathematics at the University of
North Texas.
Amount
Scholarships will be awarded in amounts ranging from $200
to $1000. Recipients will receive half the award early in
the Fall semester and half in the Spring semester contingent
upon satisfactory performance in the Fall semester.
Criteria
Applicant must be a current or future UNT student
whose major is mathematics. Recipients must have demonstrated
academic excellence in mathematics as evidenced by formal
coursework, independent study, state and national exams,
mathematical competitions, etc.
Only one application is required to be considered for all
the scholarships. Not every scholarship is awarded every
year.
Applications must include the following:
- Name
- Permanent Address
- Present Address (if appropriate)
- Telephone Number
- Social Security Number
- A one-page statement describing your background in mathematics
(coursework, independent study, etc.), a statement of
why you study mathematics, and your plans for a career
in some field of mathematical sciences.
- Letters of recommendation from your math teachers (you
should request that these be sent to the address shown
below).
- Official transcripts or other records which show courses
studied and grades.
Review of scholarship applications by the Scholarship
Committee will begin March 1. Applications received after
this date may also be considered.

Hints for Getting Scholarships
1. Apply each year at the UNT Scholarship Office
at http://essc.unt.edu/finaid/scholarships_grad.htm
Check early in the spring semester for the application and
deadlines.
2. Search the Scholarship, Fellowship,
and Financial Aid Information portion on the Toulouse School
of Graduate Studies at http://www.tsgs.unt.edu
or stop by their office in the Administration Building,
Room 206 (see
map).
3. The UNT Office of Postgraduate Fellowships
at http://www.opgf.unt.edu/
assists graduate students in identifying and pursuing externally
funded research and study opportunities. Dr. James Duban,
director of OPGF, invites students to inquire about the
preparation and credentials necessary to compete successfully
for such postgraduate awards as Rhodes, Marshall, Fulbright,
James Madison, Harry S. Truman, Andrew W. Mellon, and National
Science Foundation scholarships and fellowships. This site
describes the scholarships that are generally considered
the most prestigious. Many other scholarships are available.
Graduate Research Fellowships
The Education and Research Experiences for Graduate Students

is administered by Oak Ridge Associated Universities.
For American Women
P.E.O. at http://www.peointernational.org/
is a women's philanthropic group that provides one year
scholarships (called the P.E.O. Scholar Award) for American
women in the last 1 to 2 years of their graduate studies
(masters or Ph.D.). Currently (1999) the funding is $7,000
per scholarship. A woman must be nominated by a local chapter
of P.E.O. (there are 3 chapters Denton) and then complete
an extensive application. These are highly competitive.

AAUW (Association of American University Women) at http://www.aauw.org
provides a scholarship for women in the last 1 to 2
years of writing their (Ph.D.) dissertation; all other work
must be completed. In 1998 the funding was 14,000. There
is an extensive application available through the organization.
For International Women Who Plan to Return to their
Home Country
P.E.O. at http://www.peointernational.org/,
a women's philanthropic group provides scholarships (called
the P.E.O. International Peace Scholarship Fund) for international
women who plan to return to their home country after getting
a degree in the USA. A woman must be nominated by a local
chapter of P.E.O. (there are 3 chapters in Denton) and then
fill out an extensive application.

Professional Conferences for Students
UNT-based: The Raupe Professional Awards are $150
financial grants given to 8 students in the fall semester.
The awards are to be used to attend a professional conference,
often dealing with the student's field of study. The deadline
for turning in a Raupe Professional Award application is
November 15. The applications are located in the Student
Activities office which is on the 2nd floor of the UNT Union.
Completed applications should be put in the box of Mike
McClendon, Director of Fiscal Affairs (MikeM@dsa.admin.unt.edu).
