MAA members work for a variety of organizations,  from technology companies to pharmaceutical research labs, from defense industries to financial firms, from government agencies to software development start-ups.   This Special Interest Group of the MAA (SIGMAA) provides resources and a forum for mathematicians working in business, industry and government to
  • Make professional connections
  • Build partnerships
  • Aid professional development
  • Discuss important issues, and
  • Help advance the mathematics profession.
To become involved in the activities of the SIGMAA, first, join the MAA.  Then join this SIGMAA through a $10 dues supplement.  You can do both by printing the MAA membership form and sending the completed form to the address given at the top of the form.  If you are currently a member of the MAA and want to enhance your membership by joining this SIGMAA, indicate on the membership form that you are joining BIG SIGMAA and only pay the $10 dues supplement.

BIG Ideas.  Your BIG ideas are wanted!  The BIG SIGMAA plans and coordinates events at regional and national MAA meetings for mathematicians involved and interested in Business, Industry and Government.  Events include receptions, panel discussions, paper sessions, poster sessions, speaker lists.  What BIG activities would you like to see and participate in?  Contact Phil Gustafson or Greg Coxson (pgustafs@mesastate.edu, coxsons4@NETZERO.NET) and get involved in a BIG way!

Nominations and Elections.
It's time to nominate BIG SIGMAA officers.  All positions, except for Secretary/Treasurer, are up for election.  We need nominations for Chair, Vice Chair for Services, Vice Chair for Membership, and Vice Chair for Programs.  Descriptions for each position are given below.

Nominations should be sent to me at monticino@unt.edu by September 1, 2005.  All nominations must include the nominee's name, employer, title, and current e-mail address.  Nominees will be contacted to determine their willingness to stand for election (self-nominations are fine).  An election slate of candidates will be presented for voting through the MAA website in October.

BIG Events at the New Orleans. BIG SIGMAA has several events planned for the New Orleans Joint Mathematics Meetings.  Make sure to mark your calendars.  Events include:

"Mathematics Experiences in Business, Industry, and Government", Contributed Paper Session.  (check the meeting schedule for room).

Submit an abstract for the session through the AMS website.  Abstracts are due September 26, 2006.

This contributed paper session will provide a forum for mathematicians with experience in Business, Industry and Government to discuss projects involving the application of mathematics to BIG problems. BIG mathematicians as well as faculty and students in academia who are interested in learning more about applications of mathematics will find this session of interest. Join us and see what your BIG colleagues are up to!

Welcome Reception for Mathematicians in Business, Industry and Government. (check the meeting schedule for room).

The reception is open to all conference participants and will provide a great opportunity to interact with your BIG SIGMAA colleagues.  Refreshments and appetizers will be served.

Peter DeLong doesn't recall what gave him the idea to begin organizing Math Awareness Week (MAW) activities at Hughes Aircraft Company (now Raytheon) in April 1997.  Perhaps, it was the theme,  "Mathematics and the Internet." More ...

Innovation in science and mathematics relies on combining disparate elements that may not seem to hold any practical application by themselves.  To foster innovation, companies need to save a place for discussion of a wide array of topics, forgiving some divergence from the safe, obviously useful ones.  The Math/Physics seminar Lockheed Martin provides exactly this kind of venue.  More...

The BIG Network ...

Need a good reference book?  Want to know which of several statistical techniques works best?  Need to find a freeware implementation of an algorithm?  This is the place to post a technical question and get advice from your BIG SIGMAA colleagues.
What do you think?  What do your colleagues think?  Here BIG SIGMAA members discuss issues affecting careers, professional development, the mathematics profession, and education.
What strategies can mathematicians working in business, industry or government use to prevent professional (ie., mathematical) isolation?

The BIG Listserve is the place to go for all you BIG questions, issues and discussion.  To post on the list serve, send your message to Greg Coxson at coxsons4@NETZERO.NET.
