Grading: There will be 13 weekly homeworks worth 10 points each, one midterm exam worth 150 points, and a final exam worth 220 points.

Text: Contemporary Abstract Algebra, 5th edition, by Joseph Gallian.

Course: This course will cover groups, beginning with definitions and ending with Sylow theory.  The aim will be to introduce you to rigorous algebraic proofs and prepare you for the groups section of the algebra qualifying exam.  We will cover Chapters 0-11, 24, and 25.


It is the responsibility of students with certified disabilities to provide the instructor with appropriate documentation from the Dean of Students Office.
