INSTRUCTOR:   Charles Conley,  GAB 475,  (940) 565-3326

OFFICE HOURS:   Tuesday and Thursday 1:00-3:00, and by appointment

CLASS MEETS:   TR 3:30-4:50, Business 329

TEXT, MATERIALS, AND PREREQUISITES: The text is Geometry: Theorems and Constructions, by Berele and Goldman.  You will also need a straight edge and compass (it is worth while to get a high quality threaded compass along with the appropriate type of lead).  Calculators will not be allowed on exams.  The prerequisite is Mathematical Proofs (3130) or Real Analysis I (Math 2510).

EXAMS, HOMEWORK, AND GRADING: There will be two 100 point midterms, on Tuesday, Feb. 19 and Tuesday, April 2, and a comprehensive 180 point final on Thursday, May 9, 1:30-3:30.  There will also be twelve 10 point homeworks, due Thursdays at the beginning of class.  There will be no make-up exams except for emergencies, and late homework will be worth half-credit.

TOPICS: This course will focus on Euclidean geometry, covering Chapters 1-6 and parts of 7-9 of the text.  Its main purpose is to prepare you to teach middle school, and so the course will not emphasize proofs as heavily as the text.  A little under half of each assignment will be made up of problems from the book, and the rest will be problems I make up.

4060 STUDENTS: Please let me know if you are taking Math 4060 rather than Math 3150.  In that case your homeworks and exams will be a little longer, involving more proofs.

It is the responsibility of students with certified disabilities to provide the instructor with appropriate documentation from the Dean of Students Office.

FINAL EXAM:  Thursday, May 9, 1:30-3:30

EXAM 2:  Tuesday, April 2

HOMEWORK 5, Due Thursday, Feb. 28:

3150:  Chapter 5, problems 1, 2, 3, 4, and 7.  In problem 1, do only the three parts on the left.  Skip the three parts on the right (including the top one, which I originally did assign).

4060:  Do all of the 3150 problems and also Chapter 5, problem 9.

EXAM 1:  Tuesday, Feb. 19.  The review sheet will be given out on Tuesday, Feb. 12, and Feb. 14 will be a review day.

REVIEW SHEET ERROR: In Problem 5, I forgot to say that the angle in the lower left corner is 45 degrees.

HOMEWORK 4, Due Thursday, Feb. 14:

3150:  Chapter 4, problem 1, and the 9 problems I handed out in class

4060:  Do Chapter 4, problems 2 and 3 in addition to the entire 3150 problem set

HOMEWORK 3, Due Thursday, Feb. 7:

3150:  Chapter 3, problems 6. 9. 10ab. 13, and the 7 problems I handed out in class

4060:  Do in addition Chapter 3 problems 7, 10c, and one extra handwritten problem
